We design and build solid-wood pieces one order at a time — oak, walnut and rattan, kiln-dried for the Malaysian climate and finished by hand in our Muar workshop.

How we build
Four steps, six to eight weeks
Nothing here is pulled off a shelf. Every order starts as a conversation about the room it is going into, and ends with two people carrying it up your stairs.
We draw it around your room
Send us the room — a photo, a rough width, where the light comes from. We sketch the piece to fit it, and price it before anything is cut.
We choose the boards by hand
Oak and walnut are kiln-dried to 10–12% for the Malaysian climate, then laid out board by board so the grain runs the way it should across a top.
It is cut, jointed and finished
Mortise-and-tenon where it carries weight, hand-planed where you touch it, then a food-safe hardwax oil rubbed in rather than sprayed on.
We deliver and place it
Our own team brings it in, levels it and takes the packaging away. Nothing is left flat-packed at your door.
Our story
A workshop in Muar, since 2009
Burnished Oak began with one bench, one bandsaw and a stubborn dislike of furniture that does not last. We had spent years repairing imported pieces that fell apart in the humidity — veneer lifting, particle board swelling — and decided it was easier to build them properly than to keep fixing them.
Everything we make is solid timber, kiln-dried to suit a Malaysian house rather than a European one. We joint it the slow way, because a mortise-and-tenon outlives the glue that would have replaced it, and we finish by hand so the grain still feels like wood under your palm.
Fifteen years on there are eleven of us, and we still build to order. It means waiting six to eight weeks. It also means the table in your dining room was cut for that room, and can be repaired rather than replaced for as long as you own it.

Joinery you can see
Through-tenons and dovetails left visible where they carry the load — the structure is the decoration.

Caned by hand in the workshop, tensioned so it stays taut through years of humidity.

Hardwax oil rubbed into the grain, never sprayed on, so a scratch buffs out instead of chipping.
